๐Ÿ’ฌ Neighbourhood message

Hi neighbours! ๐Ÿˆ Our cat our cat has been missing.
Could you check your shed, garage and under your car? Cats often get accidentally locked in there.
Thank you so much! ๐Ÿ™

Cat missing: what should you do?

First this: most missing cats are found, often surprisingly close to home. So always start inside โ€” cupboards, under beds, behind the washing machine โ€” and in your own garden, shed and those of your neighbours. Cats that get frightened or accidentally locked in often stay completely still for days. Put your (used) litter box and a bowl of food outside: the familiar scent can lure your cat home. Then report the disappearance straight away to your local lost-pet service, such as Missing Pet or Animal Search UK.

Then use this tool to create an eye-catching A4 poster with a photo, description and your phone number, and put it up within a radius of about 500 metres: lamp posts, the supermarket, the pet shop. Post the same appeal in neighbourhood Facebook groups and community WhatsApp chats โ€” the ready-made messages are waiting for you above. Search in the evening and at night with a torch, when it is quiet: frightened cats only come out then.

The microchip number is gold

If your cat is found by a vet, shelter or animal ambulance, the chip is the fastest route back to you โ€” but only if your details are correct. So check straight away that your phone number is up to date in the chip database. Keep the chip number somewhere safe, for example in the free cat passport on Kattenkamer: that way this tool fills in the poster automatically for you at the moment when every minute counts. Is a cat sitter looking after your cat soon? Put the chip number and your emergency numbers in the cat-sitter instructions too.

Frequently asked questions

How far does a missing cat roam?

Usually not far. Indoor cats that escape often stay within 50 to 250 metres of home; outdoor cats rarely stray further than a few hundred metres to about a kilometre. Focus your search on the immediate area first before expanding it.

How long can a cat stay away?

A few hours to a few days is not unusual, especially for outdoor cats. Many cats only reappear after five to ten days. Keep searching daily, refresh the food outside and donโ€™t give up โ€” cats are still reunited with their owners even after weeks.

What do you put on a lost-cat poster?

A large, recent photo, your catโ€™s name, when and where it was last seen, distinctive features (coat colour, collar, chip) and a clearly readable phone number. Also mention if your cat is shy, so finders donโ€™t chase it but call you directly.

Where do you report a missing cat?

At your local lost-pet service (free), in local Facebook and Nextdoor groups, at vets and the nearest animal shelter, and with the animal ambulance. Give the chip number everywhere if you have it.
